Chuya + ALLERGY + FAR-EAST PHALLUS KICKER | Live-Report @ Shinjuku LOFT, Tokyo [JP] (2022)

Chuya is a Japanese artist from the alternative rock/goth scene whose career currently spans four decades. Thanks to this exceptionally longevity, the singer has been able to attract attention and earn respect from artists of different generations, some of who are well-known. Always inspired, the singer continues to create and build musical projects, the latest of which, FAR-EAST PHALLUS KICKER whom we interviewed and photographed recently (read the interview here). To celebrate Chuya’s sixtieth birthday, a concert was organized bringing together his closest musician-friends. In Japan, and more broadly in Asia, turning sixty marks a very special stage in the life of a human-being. This event is called kanreki and connotes the idea of a rebirth. When a person reaches the age of 60, the legend says that she-he would have gone through the Chinese zodiac cycle a total of five times and has therefore now returned to her-his birth zodiac. The term kanreki is derived from the words kan (return) and reki (calendar). The sixtieth year in the life of a man or woman is thus considered as a chance to start a brand new cycle again.
Despite his introspective nature, Chuya was grateful and excited to celebrate his birthday on stage with his fans, friends, and family. Dressed in a red chan-chanko, a traditional jacket symbolizing youth and rebirth, Chuya performed with his bands ALLERGY, FAR-EAST PHALLUS KICKER, and his musical projects Venus and Zeus, Chuya + Koya, at the lively Shinjuku LOFT in Tokyo. The concert was an intimate and passionate affair, with Chuya and his musician-friends delivering a memorable performance to the delight of the audience. The evening was filled with a mix of Chuya’s classic hits and new songs, showcasing his versatility. The crowd, consisting of longtime fans and newcomers alike, sang along and danced to the infectious beats, creating an electric atmosphere. Chuya’s powerful and emotive vocals resonated throughout the venue, captivating everyone in attendance. His stage presence was undeniable, as he effortlessly commanded the attention of the audience with his charismatic and energetic performance. The musicians accompanying him displayed their exceptional talent, adding depth and intensity to the music. As the concert came to a close, the crowd erupted in applause and cheers, expressing their appreciation for Chuya’s incredible talent and the unforgettable experience they had just witnessed. Chuya, visibly moved by the outpouring of love and support, expressed his gratitude to everyone who had been a part of his musical journey. The evening continued with a private birthday party, where guests had the opportunity to celebrate with Chuya. Surrounded by friends, family, and fellow musicians, Chuya enjoyed a night of laughter, heartfelt conversations, and shared memories. It was a time for reflection, celebration, and gratitude for the years of dedication and passion that Chuya has poured into his music. Overall, the event was a testament to Chuya’s enduring career and his ability to connect with fans across generations. His music has touched the lives of many, and his birthday concert was a fitting tribute to his artistry and the impact he has had on the Japanese music scene. As Chuya enters this new chapter of his life, fans eagerly anticipate what he has in store for the future and continue to support him on his musical journey.
Although being a pretty unconventional man, Chuya insisted on wearing a red chan-chanko (a jacket traditionally worn during the 60th birthday celebration. The color red symbolizes youth and rebirth in Japan). Located in a lively district of Tokyo, the live-house Shinjuku LOFT welcomed Chuya, dressed in red, to perform with his bands ALLERGY, FAR-EAST PHALLUS KICKER and musical projects Venus and Zeus, Chuya + Koya. The invasive and disabling stress felt before the concert completely evaporated once Chuya set foot on stage for his passion and artistry shine at that very moment. Chuya and his musician-friends were able to offer an intimate and passionate performance to the delight of his fans. Thereafter, the evening continued with a private birthday party.
