His unique style, raw honesty, and genuine spirit touched the souls of those who listened. As a true legend, his memory will forever live on, his voice echoing through the hearts of those mesmerized by his talent and authenticity. In this article, we delve into the remarkable points that have solidified Atsushi’s status as a legend in his own right.

BUCK-TICK
BUCK-TICK, led by the legendary pair Atsushi Sakurai and Hisashi Imai, played a pivotal role in the visual-kei revolution and Japanese rock scene as a whole. BUCK TICK has consistently demonstrated their mastery in both quality and diversity with each album they crafted. Throughout their impressive 35-year career, BUCK-TICK released 23 studio albums, each showcasing their evolution and experimentation with different musical styles. In addition to his remarkable vocals, BUCK-TICK’s songwriting was truly one-of-a-kind. Their compositions were meticulously crafted, incorporating multiple layers of sounds that were catchy, intriguing and powerful. The band’s ability to seamlessly blend different genres and styles is a testament to their musical prowess and creativity. But, BUCK-TICK’s influence extended beyond their music, inspiring countless other Japanese bands to embrace their own unique styles and push artistic boundaries. BUCK-TICK’s attention to detail extended beyond their music. The band’s visuals were meticulously planned and executed, further enhancing the overall experience of their artistry. Atsushi Sakurai had High Emotional Potential). His ability to convey the essence of a song through his voice and body language was truly unequaled, unparalleled. He could navigate easily between soft, delicate moments and powerful, soaring was truly impressive. He effortlessly switched between different dynamics, keeping the audience engaged throughout. Atsushi Sakurai had the power to evoke emotions and create an intimate connection with the audience through his performance. He often employed seductive movements and expressions that conveyed a sense of sensuality and allure. He was a charismatic stage performer and vocalist that possessed a magnetic presence and an undeniable charm that drew the audience in. Atsushi Sakurai’s charisma as a performer was a key factor in BUCK-TICK’s enduring success and his status as an iconic figure in the Japanese music industry.

THE LYRICIST, A LUNAR DREAM
Atsushi Sakurai was also an amazing lyricist due to his exceptional ability to delve into the depths of human emotions and convey them through his poetic and evocative words. His lyrics, imbued with gothic imagery, possessed a profound and introspective quality that resonated with listeners on a deeply personal level. One of his greatest strengths as a lyricist was his mastery of language and imagery, selecting words that painted vivid pictures and evoked strong emotions. His lyrics often explored complex themes such as love, lust, loss, death, existentialism, and sorrow, delving into the intricacies of the human experience. In Atsushi’s work, the imagery of the moon and dreams played a significant role in conveying a wide range of emotions and themes.
The moon, a celestial body that illuminates the night sky, held a symbolic presence in various cultures and artistic expressions. Within Atsushi’s lyrics, the moon often served as a metaphor for mystery, beauty, and transformation. Its association with nighttime and darkness added an element of intrigue and allure, representing the hidden and subconscious aspects of life. The moon’s changing phases, mirroring the cyclical nature of life and the passage of time, reflected the ebb and flow of emotions and experiences. The moon imagery in Atsushi’s lyrics hinted at a connection to the unknown, the supernatural, or the realm of dreams. It suggested a world beyond the tangible, where imagination and fantasy intertwined. The moon became a guiding light, leading the way into uncharted territories of the mind and soul.
Dreams, on the other hand, held another significance in Sakurai’s lyrical repertoire. They were seen as a gateway to the inner self, where hidden emotions, thoughts, and desires could manifest freely. Dreams offered a realm where boundaries blurred, allowing for the exploration of the subconscious mind. They often carried symbolic meanings or messages that were not easily deciphered in waking life. In Atsushi’s lyrics, the imagery of dreams conveyed a longing for something beyond the confines of reality. It signified a desire to escape the mundane and delve into the depths of one’s desires and emotions. Dreams became a canvas for the expression of unfulfilled yearnings, a sanctuary where the imagination could roam free.
Both the moon and dreams evoked a sense of enchantment, mystery, and a departure from the ordinary. They symbolized a realm where emotions and desires could be freely expressed, and where the subconscious could come to the forefront. The combination of these two powerful images in Atsushi Sakurai’s lyrics created a tapestry of longing, transformation, and a yearning for a transcendent experience. It suggested a desire to blur the boundaries between reality and fantasy, immersing oneself in a world where the ordinary was left behind and the extraordinary took center stage. Sakurai’s lyrics were known for their introspective nature, often reflecting his own personal journey and struggles. His ability to express vulnerability and raw emotions allowed listeners to connect with his words on a deeply empathetic level. Furthermore, his lyrics were often layered with multiple meanings and interpretations, inviting listeners to engage in reflection and interpretation. His poetic and thought-provoking approach to songwriting added depth and complexity to his lyrics, resonating with listeners who found solace and understanding in his music.

SEX AND GENDER
Atsushi Sakurai’s impact on the Japanese music scene extended far beyond his vocal abilities and music. Not only did he embody the different sub genres of gothic music, but he also embraced its visual aesthetics. His striking and androgynous appearance made him a gothic fashion icon, inspiring countless fans to embrace their own unique styles. Atsushi Sakurai was a fashion icon due to his fearless exploration and redefinition of traditional gender norms and his distinctive gothic-inspired style. Throughout his career, he challenged societal expectations and embraced a fluid approach to gender expression. He has been known to experiment with androgynous fashion choices, blurring the oppressive lines of masculine and feminine aesthetics. From his early days of sporting long hair to later embracing high knee socks with garter belts and mini shorts, the man’s fashion choices have defied traditional gender stereotypes and embraced a more gender-neutral and boundary-pushing style. And this, contributes to his status as an icon. His fashion choices have been characterized by a sense of elegance and sophistication, combined with a touch of darkness and mystery. This unique blend of gothic aesthetics and androgynous fashion has made him a standout figure in the fashion world. Beyond his fashion choices, Atsushi Sakurai also displayed an openness to different sexualities. On stage, he performed suggestively alongside other male artists (ISSAY, Raymond Watts, Kiyoharu). His willingness to challenge societal expectations and embrace diversity surely made him a trailblazer in the industry.

Defying gender norms can significantly enhance an artist’s appeal, although it is not the sole determinant of their success. Artists, such as Atsushi, who challenge societal expectations surrounding gender, often garner attention and recognition for a multitude of reasons. Here, we explore the factors that contribute to their standout status:

  1. Authenticity: By challenging traditional gender norms, these artists often express their true selves and showcase their unique identity. This authenticity resonates with fans who appreciate their genuine and unapologetic approach to self-expression. Atsushi Sakurai has often challenged traditional gender norms through his fashion choices and stage presence, expressing his true self and individuality.
  2. Breaking Boundaries: Artists who defy gender norms push the boundaries of societal expectations and challenge the status quo. This can be seen as revolutionary and inspiring, attracting fans who are drawn to their boldness and willingness to challenge norms.
  3. Representation: Many individuals who do not conform to traditional gender norms often feel underrepresented in mainstream media and entertainment. Artists who defy gender norms provide representation and visibility for these individuals, creating a sense of belonging and empowerment among their fan base. Atsushi Sakurai’s unique style and androgynous image have provided representation for individuals who do not conform to traditional gender norms. His presence in the media has helped create visibility and acceptance for those who identify outside of societal norms.
  4. Artistic Innovation: Breaking free from gender norms often leads to artistic innovation and experimentation. These artists often bring fresh perspectives and unique artistic styles, which can captivate audiences and set them apart from more conventional artists. BUCK-TICK has consistently evolved their sound and incorporated various influences, making them stand out in the Japanese music scene.

SIDE-PROJECTS & SOLO CAREER
In addition to defying gender norms, Atsushi Sakurai’s artistic endeavors have also included collaborations that break cultural boundaries. One notable example is his collaboration with Raymond Watts, a renowned figure in underground industrial goth music. In 2001, Atsushi, Raymond, and BUCK-TICK’s main composer and guitarist Hisashi Imai formed the band SCHWEIN, releasing an exceptional hybrid industrial album. The concept behind SCHWEIN’s musical endeavor can be likened to the creation of a fusion monster, drawing inspiration from diverse cultures and musical styles, much like the iconic character Frankenstein. This collaboration brought together the unique talents and perspectives of artists from different backgrounds, resulting in a truly innovative and boundary-pushing musical experience. By forming a band with non-Japanese musicians and exploring genres outside of their usual rock sound, Atsushi Sakurai demonstrated a willingness to embrace cultural diversity and experiment with new musical styles. The collaboration between Atsushi Sakurai, Raymond Watts, and Hisashi Imai with SCHWEIN not only showcased their artistic innovation but also highlighted the power of cross-cultural collaboration in creating something truly unique and groundbreaking. This endeavor further contributed to Atsushi’s reputation as an artist who is unafraid to challenge conventions and explore new artistic territories.
In 2004, Atsushi Sakurai made his solo debut with the release of his first studio album, Ai no Wakusei which demonstrated, once again, his versatility as an artist through a fusion of various genres and collaborations. One notable collaboration on the album was with Clan of Xymox, pioneers of darkwave music. This collaboration added a unique element to the album, further highlighting Atsushi Sakurai’s willingness to explore new musical territories and experiment with different sounds. Following his solo debut, Atsushi Sakurai continued to embrace his gothic tendencies. In 2015, he embarked on a side project called THE MORTAL, where he delved even deeper into the realm of post-punk gothic rock. Inspired by influential Western gothic rock bands like Bauhaus and Siouxsie and the Banshees, Atsushi Sakurai and his bandmates aimed to create a sonic experience that seamlessly merged the darkness and melancholy of gothic music with the raw energy and intensity of rock. The resulting album, I Am Mortal, fully embraced Atsushi Sakurai’s affinity for gothic rock. Every aspect of the record, from the depressing melodies to the introspective lyrics, exuded a brooding soliloquy and an unmistakable gloomy energy. This project further solidified Atsushi’s reputation as an artist who fearlessly explores different genres and fully immerses himself in his artistic vision. Through his solo career and side projects, Atsushi Sakurai had consistently demonstrated his willingness to push boundaries and explore diverse musical styles.

MORTAL
In 2023, after the release of BUCK-TICK’s latest album, Izora, Atsushi Sakurai expressed his joy, reconnecting with friends and delivering electrifying performances on stage. Witnessing his journey of resilience, overcoming recurring bouts of illness and health struggles, filled us with hope for his promising future. The rekindled friendships and moments of pure joy seemed to signal a new chapter in his life. However, tragedy struck later that same year when Atsushi Sakurai suffered the loss of his mentor and close friend, ISSAY (DER ZIBET). Although not bound by blood or familial ties, their connection ran deep, forged through their shared experiences as musicians and humans. ISSAY and Atsushi were kindred spirits, supporting and inspiring each other throughout their respective careers. Their collaborations and shared passion for gothic music served as a testament to their mutual respect and admiration. Despite the absence of a familial bond, their artistic connection and contributions to the gothic movement in Japan will forever remain intertwined. The untimely and accidental death of ISSAY took a heavy toll on Atsushi. Tragically, just three months later, he too passed away. The devastating loss of his soul brother, ISSAY, and the weight of decades of personal tribulations shattered our optimistic illusions. In that profound moment of realization, we came to understand that despite his legendary status as an artist, Atsushi Sakurai was undeniably human, and mortality was an inevitable fate, even for the greatest individuals.
However, his memory will endure, his voice resonating in the hearts of those captivated by his immense talent and unwavering authenticity. His music will continue to inspire future generations, a testament to the transformative power of artistic expression. The flower ceremony held on December 8 and 9 stands as proof of Sakurai’s profound impact on people. Friends and fans gathered in a solemn celebration, a powerful, sad, and beautiful tribute to the man himself. Attendees dressed in somber attire, mirroring the solemnity of the occasion, while the venue was adorned with a variety of flowers, their vibrant colors contrasting the mournful ambiance. Throughout the venue, pictures of Sakurai were displayed, each one a poignant tribute to his life and legacy. The stage, adorned with the costumes he once wore during performances, was a sight to behold. The scene was a fusion of strength and beauty, underscored by a palpable sense of sorrow. Giant posters, on which fans had written heartfelt messages when the last tour was cancelled, added to the emotional atmosphere, further amplifying the poignancy of the farewell ceremony.
May Acchan rest in peace.

IMMORTAL
Oddly, in an interview, Atsushi Sakurai, disclosed that BUCK-TICK’s latest album, Izora, released in April 2023, was approached with a sense of finality, as if he had an inkling that it would be his last. Little did he know that his words would soon take on an eerie significance. With Atsushi’s untimely passing, the question arises: what lies ahead for BUCK-TICK?
Known for their boundary-pushing creativity and otherworldly presence, BUCK-TICK refused to let their annual concert, scheduled for December 29 (2023), be canceled. Taking the stage amidst a backdrop of images showcasing Atsushi, the band demonstrated their unity and determination to carry on as a five-member ensemble. Rejecting the notion of replacing their beloved brother with guest-singers, BUCK-TICK showcased the extraordinary bond they share as well as their uniqueness. The emotional atmosphere was palpable, with guitarist Imai Hisashi moving many to tears with his heartfelt words. He acknowledged the difficulty of bidding farewell but emphasized the importance of celebrating Atsushi’s legacy and life. Hisashi reminded everyone that death is an inevitable part of the human experience, and while Atsushi’s passing is a natural occurrence, his spirit will live on through their music. With resolute determination, BUCK-TICK announced the creation of a new album, signaling their transformation and a renewed sense of power and energy. Their refusal to be confined by mortality underscores their belief that BUCK-TICK will never die, that their music is immortal. As fans mourn the loss of Atsushi Sakurai, the enigmatic frontman who defied conventions and left an indelible mark on the music industry, BUCK-TICK’s unwavering commitment to carry on serves as a testament to their enduring legacy. The band’s journey continues, fueled by their boundless creativity and the spirit of their fallen comrade.
BUCK-TICK is immortal.
