Unveiling the enigmatic world of Mana Sama: exploring Moi Dix Mois’ concept, gothic fashion and the enchanting collaboration with Kanon Wakeshima.

Moi Dix Mois is a Japanese visual kei band formed by Mana, a prominent figure in the visual kei and gothic lolita fashion scene. Mana is the guitarist and main composer of the band. Moi Dix Mois is known for their dark and atmospheric sound, blending elements of gothic rock and symphonic metal. Mana Sama is recognized for his unique and elaborate visual style, often incorporating gothic and aristocratic elements into his fashion and stage presence. Mana Sama is considered a pioneer in the visual kei and gothic lolita fashion movements, and his influence can be seen in the aesthetics of many bands and fashion enthusiasts in Japan.

—— You are about to release the European version of DVD DIXANADU ~ Fated“raison d’être”~Europe Tour 2007 . How will it differ from the Japanese version?
Mana
: Absolutely! The European edition will not only feature the documentary with subtitles, but also a booklet showcasing exclusive photos from our unforgettable European tour. As an added bonus, the first edition will include a personally signed photo. We wanted to express our gratitude and appreciation to our European fans in a special way through this release. Let me tell you, the Parisian fans were absolutely incredible and their passion was truly awe-inspiring. It was undeniably one of our most exceptional stage performances to date. Without a doubt, it was the perfect way to conclude our tour.

—— How about Moi Dix Mois’ next album?
Mana
: Our recent concerts in Japan gave us the opportunity to showcase some of our unreleased tracks. As of now, Moi dix Mois is gearing up for pre-production on our highly anticipated next studio album. While I don’t want to reveal too much just yet, I can assure you that what I have in store will be a reflection of my artistic vision. This upcoming album will delve into darker themes, but at the same time, it will embrace classic sounds in a way that surpasses our previous works.

—— What has changed in your musical approach in recent years?
Mana
: I believe that my music is in a constant state of evolution. However, I am also firm in my belief that the core essence of my music has remained unchanged from its inception to the present day. The foundation, the principle of merging a certain level of intensity with beauty, has remained steadfast.

—— Do you still consider Moi Dix Mois as your solo project? If so, will you keep the same line-up for the next album?
Mana
: Moi dix Mois is primarily my solo project, but I must acknowledge the immense talent and potential of the current members. They play a crucial role in shaping the way I express my music today. While they are integral to the current lineup, I remain open to the possibility of adding new members in the future. The decision to expand the group will ultimately depend on my artistic vision and the direction I wish to take.

—— When it comes to album songs and concepts, how do you share your ideas with the other members?
Mana
: When it comes to creating our songs, I begin by discussing the theme and concept of each track with the other members. I then encourage each member to infuse their own musical performance with their interpretation of the theme. In particular, I spend a significant amount of time working closely with Seth, our vocalist. I take the time to share my perspective and guide him on how to express the lyrics in a way that captures the desired atmosphere we envision for each song. It’s a collaborative process that allows us to bring our collective vision to life.

—— The lyrics of your songs always speak of loneliness, despair, darkness. Where do your texts come from?
Mana
: I have a deep appreciation for beautiful melodies that evoke a sense of melancholy, encapsulating emotions of sadness and suffering. It is often these melodies that inspire me, and the words seem to flow naturally and organically as I listen to them. In my creative process, I typically compose the music before delving into the lyrics. It is important to me that the words align harmoniously with the music, creating a seamless connection between the two.

—— What inspires you the most?
Mana
: The intricate counterpoints, the interplay of melodies, and the sheer brilliance of Bach’s compositions have a profound impact on me. When I immerse myself in his music, I experience a heightened state of emotions and my feelings reach their pinnacle. It is in this state of mind that I find the greatest inspiration for my own musical endeavors. Bach’s ability to create such intricate and captivating compositions is truly unparalleled, and it serves as a constant source of inspiration for me.

—— Leaders are often said to be alone. What is your opinion on this? Do you consider yourself a loner?
Mana
: I do not perceive myself as a loner, so I don’t feel particularly affected by this issue. Perhaps I can be seen as an exception that challenges the norm. However, I do recognize that being a leader comes with its own set of challenges and responsibilities. Despite the difficulties, I am committed to maintaining my leadership position, no matter the cost.

—— What about the plan to open a Moi-même-Moitié boutique in Europe?
Mana
: Currently, the Harajuku boutique in Paris is offering a selection of Moi-même-Moitié clothing. However, I do have aspirations to eventually establish a dedicated Moi-même-Moitié boutique in Europe.

—— As for the artwork of Moi Dix Mois, how far are you envolved?
Mana
: As for the artwork, I am quite involved in their design process. Drawing inspiration from the atmosphere of the songs, I create rough sketches that serve as a basis for detailed instructions given to the graphic designer.

—— The group’s logo represents a decagon with a numerological system. Does it hide a special meaning?
Mana
: The group’s logo, a decagon. It holds a special meaning. It originates from the word “ten” in Moi dix Mois, and I decided to incorporate it into the logo design. By disassembling the number 10, we have 1 and 0, where 1 represents the beginning of a whole and 0 symbolizes eternity. It carries a symbolic significance that reflects the essence of the group.

—— You recently worked with Kanon Wakeshima. Can you tell us more about it?
Mana
: Kanon Wakeshima is an artist I had the opportunity to work with recently. Sony Record approached me with the idea of producing an artist, and as my interest in musical production was growing, I found the concept appealing. Among the artists selected by Sony was Kanon Wakeshima. We met during an audition, and as she sang and played the cello, I immediately sensed the potential for creating something interesting together. We made the decision to produce her music. Kanon Wakeshima is actually the first female artist I have produced. I was thrilled with her live performance at Fnac des Champs Élysées last February. It was a great success. I produced her entire record, I composed the songs, I arranged them, and I supervised all the artwork and everything related to the visuals. I was present everywhere but my involvement was primarily in the production aspect.

—— How was your relationship working?
Mana
: When it came to the recording process, it was a new experience for Kanon Wakeshima, but it wasn’t a problem for her. She had been studying classical music since a young age, which gave her a good ear for music. As a result, the recording process went smoothly and gradually. Our working relationship was genuine and serious, allowing us to create music together in a harmonious manner. My involvement was primarily in the production aspect, as I said earlier, which required a significant amount of work on my part. The most challenging aspect, in my opinion, was finding a way to not let it interfere with my own projects and to allocate the necessary time and focus to it. Now that Kanon Wakeshima’s album is released, I can shift my attention to other endeavors. If needed, I can still contribute songs, but I believe I can maintain a certain balance between multiple projects.

—— Would you like to collaborate with other artists?
Mana
: In the future, I am eager to take on new challenges and explore different perspectives and possibilities. If I come across someone interesting, I will definitely be open to the idea of getting involved in production again. I am particularly intrigued by the prospect of working with European artists and experiencing the creative process in that context. It would be an exciting opportunity to collaborate and bring forth unique musical projects.

—— What are your projects for the year 2009?
Mana
: In July, I am thrilled to announce that Közi, co-founder of Malice Mizer, and I will be embarking on a highly anticipated Coupling Tour in Tokyo and Osaka, Japan. This tour promises to be an exciting collaboration, bringing together our unique musical styles and performances. Following the tour, my focus will shift towards the production of the new Moi Dix Mois studio album. I am eager to delve into the creative process, crafting new songs and exploring fresh musical directions. I look forward to connecting with fans across Europe and sharing our music in a live setting. Thank you for your continued support, and I am excited to embark on these upcoming ventures.
